We spoke with a manufacturing company in Tochigi Prefecture responsible for production about the research involved from limestone mining to manufacturing. In the first part, we will introduce the process from mining to burning lime in a kiln. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Japan Plaster comes from one of the highest quality limestone strata in Japan, formed from the accumulation of corals and other materials in the ocean approximately 250 million years ago. The production of plaster that takes advantage of the characteristics of the land began long ago. It is said that during the founding period, plaster for construction was often sold to Edo. Japanese plaster, which is believed to have been established during the Asuka period, is beautifully white, excels in fire and moisture resistance, and durability, making it widely used in shrines, temples, and castles. Today, it is a representative building material of Japan, used in major structures such as Tokyo Station.
